I have moderate to severe hearing loss in my right ear. My hearing loss in my left ear is not much, though I have difficulty in hearing high frequency sounds through my left ear. However when there is such a big difference between the ears a lot of times the ear with the hearing loss doesn’t sound clear even with the hearing aid. The hearing loss is so severe everything is distorted. the hearing aid sends in a clear sound and the ear garbles it all up and the sound actually impairs you speech understanding. If having a hearing aid would help you to hear environmental stuff for your job it may be helpful to have some amplification on that ear. But a lot of times speech understanding is actually worse with a hearing aid on an ear with that much hearing loss.

Of course, smaller horns could be used, but the effect was the same.

 

The Microphone

Thus, hearing aids regrettably did not develop very quickly until the coming of electricity in the late 1800s. Used for the first time in hearing aids in 1892, these initial models were unable of helping much. Several years later, there was a new model of hearing aids developed. These devices sat on top of tables and amplified the sound using a mike made from carbon dust and a electric battery. They were an evolution of Alexander Graham Bell’s work on the telephone. This was later supplanted by solid carbon microphones, but the price of these special models was out of reach for almost everyone. The old conventional hearing aid trumpets were still in popular demand, but the modern era of hearing aids was not too far away.

Vacuum Tubes and Transistors

During the 1920s and onward, hearing aids started using vacuum tube technology in order to immensely improve the portability of these devices. Output increased and so did competition among the different manufacturers. However, this particular model of hearing aid would not remain popular for very long. When the transistor was invented in the late 1940s, the size of the hearing aid, which has previously been carried around since it was so great in size, dramatically lessened. John Bardeen, William Shockley, and Walter Brattan improved this technology, and this model is the form on which all up-to-date hearing aids are established. The reduced size, inexpensive price, and long-term battery life helped many people hear better.
These new models were worn underneath clothing or inside a shirt pocket. The only visual portion of the hearing aid was the earpiece. When magnetic mikes were developed, hearing aids once again became much smaller. Some models were attached to eyeglasses, integrated into a much more general accessory.

Further Developments

He has to keep it loud enough to listen to it in the shower, and I can hear it, even if he goes to the bathroom in the other end of the house. I’ve seen the hearing aid things advertised so your partner can watch tv w/out disturbing you, etc, but do they have something that he can use in the shower? Or some other solution to our problem? I mean, he’s not a jerk, he’s tried to be considerate and I want both of us to get what we want. Thanks!

You can deduct a hearing aid as a medical expense. However, medical deductions are limited to anything above 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. For example, say your AGI was $10,000. The hearing aid and other medical expenses would have to exceed $750. Then you would only get a deduction for the amount over. Say the hearing aid and other medical expense were $1,000. Your deduction would be $250. Also, you would need additional itemized dedcution(mortgage interest, charitable contributions, etc.) in exccess of the standard deduction to make it worth it.
