what is the best digital hearing aid for elderly on the market ?

Looking to buy a hearing aid for my mother.

Answer
There are several hearing aid manufacturers with excellent technology available. Which one is best for YOUR mother can not be determined here. She needs a current hearing evaluation (less than six months old), and a Hearing Aid Evaluation, preferably to include a demonstration, so she can listen through hearing aids to experience what the sound is like. Also, don’t consider just the hearing aid(s), also make sure you find an Audiologist that you feel you can trust and who establishes a good rapport with your mother, for the long term of service.

Advances in Hearing Aids

When I was young, we dreaded the visits of my Great-aunt Julia. She would sit on the sofa, prim and proper, with her orthopedic shoes flat on the floor, her heavy support hose camouflaging whatever part of her legs showed beneath her floral dress, her waist thickened under that dress because of the money belt she always wore, and her white hair wound in braids close to her head. We children would be expected to sit primly as well, politely attempting to hold a conversation with her while our mother prepared a meal. The conversation was made particularly difficult since Aunt Julia was fairly deaf. She wore a hearing aid, but her head would have to be turned just so towards the speaker. We would have to repeat ourselves frequently and wince at the screech of feedback when she would turn it up too far.

Too bad Aunt Julia didn’t live long enough to appreciate the advances in hearing aids today. If she were looking today at the hearing aids South Yorkshire audiologists have available, she would be amazed. No longer would she have to tilt her head, as she might choose a programmable device with separate channels set to enhance different frequencies or the capability of amplifying soft sounds. If Aunt Julia was concerned about appearances (although the support hose might belie that notion), she would have quite the array of choices there, too.

The hearing aids East Sussex doctors might prescribe could range from a traditional behind-the-ear instrument to a virtually invisible one deep inside the ear canal. Known as a “completely in the canal” (CIC) hearing aid, this instrument helps reduce the wearer’s impression of talking in a barrel. It would also have helped save the ears of us children, since using a CIC reduces that lovely squealing feedback noise.

Yes, Aunt Julia would have been amazed and delighted at the advances she could have enjoyed in today’s hearing aids. Perhaps when I’m an elderly aunt myself, I can remember and be understanding with my great-nieces and –nephews. My hearing aids from my East Sussex doctor will be so subtle that my young relatives won’t even know I need them. This, of course, will give them less to laugh about. If I can just remember never to wear orthopedic shoes. . .

What are the reasons that an elderly person wouldn’t get a hearing aid?

My 92-year-old G’pa can’t hear anyone that doesn’t yell at him, yet he hasn’t gotten a hearing aid. It causes my visits to him to be shorter and less enjoyable (for both he and I), because I get tired of yelling and I have to use simple words that lend themselves to yelling. Can I essentially demand that he get a hearing aid?

Answer
At the age of 92 your grandfather is probably slightly set in his ways. He can remember the days when a hearing aid was a giant box you needed to wear around your neck. The problem is at his age and loss severity it may be a long and difficult road to rehabilitate him back to ‘normal’ hearing again. He may just feel like he doesn’t want the hassle or expense, which is too bad because it really could increase the quality of his life. Maybe convince him to get a free hearing aid consultation. A good hearing center will test his hearing and let him listen to some real hearing aids to see how effective they are. This consultation should be free and without obligation.

I just wanted to address some weird misnomers and disinformation that I’ve seen posted on this question:

“The hearing aids are uncomfortable and even if people have them they don’t always wear them.”

- Hearing aids that are properly fitted are never uncomfortable. If a hearing aid is uncomfortable, you need to go back to the hearing center and have the problem corrected. A correctly fitted hearing aid should be no less comfortable than spectacles.

“Also, the hearing aid magnifies what you don’t want to hear, too, like background noises or gives you painful feedback in your ear sometimes.”

- This is only true of poor quality or old fashioned hearing aids. The very latest digital technology has incredible sound quality, does not make feedback sounds or over amplify background noise.

Where can I find the serial number of my hearing aid?

I believe its stamped on the hearing aid. It says ahs# and has some numbers after that. Is that the hearing aid serial number or am I looking in the wrong place?

Answer
Not knowing what brand of hearing aid you have, I’d have to say that the AHS# number is the serial number. Hearing aids aren’t all that big, so there isn’t much in the way of space for much more info, and the serial number wouldn’t be on the inside of the unit. The only other place I’d look would be the inside of the battery door.

Hearing Aids And Tinnitus Can Tinnitus Be Treated by Wearing Two Hearing Aids

Hearing Aids And Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the name for the annoying sound that some people hear in their ear or ears. The most common sound is a ringing noise but it can be a buzzing, humming or whistling sound. It is a result of damage to the very small nerve endings within the inner ear. This damage can be caused by a continuous exposure to loud noises, such as having the stereo systems turned up to high. In older people these nerve endings can become less sensitive or damaged again causing Tinnitus.

Other causes could be as a result of an ear infection on damage to the ear through an accident. Less likely but still possible, causes could be attributed to high blood pressure, adverse reaction to certain medications or hereditary conditions.

Stress can be a major factor in making the symptoms worse but are not a direct cause of Tinnitus. Although Tinnitus can be very annoying in most cases it is not a serious life threatening problem, there is at present, no known cure.

Tinnitus masking is one of the ways of bringing relief. This is achieved by listening to your favourite music which then masks the Tinnitus sound with the music so that it cannot be heard separately. This is particularly useful for sufferers who have difficulty in getting to sleep. It is much more soothing to listen to a favourite piece of music than a continuous ringing in the ears. Hearing Aids And Tinnitus

Tinnitus sufferers quite often suffer from some form of hearing loss. Some modern Digital Hearing Aids have built in circuits that can be programmed to reduce the effects of Tinnitus. When it is discovered what frequency the Tinnitus sound is, this can be tuned out by programming the Hearing Aid to exclude the amplification of this particular sound. If the Tinnitus is present in both ears and the sufferer has only one Hearing Aid the Tinnitus will only be masked in the ear with the Hearing Aid, whereas the other ear will still hear it. To overcome this problem having two Hearing Aids should be considered. Not only will they help in masking the Tinnitus in both ears but there are other benefits in having two Aids.

Two Aids will greatly help in the ability to tell the direction a sound is coming from. They will also make understanding speech clearer especially in a crowded room, improve the quality of sound that you hear, reduce distortion and feedback and in general make listening less tiring compared with using only one Hearing Aid. Between Widex Aikia and Simens Aitis e2e which hearing aid is better?

I need help in deciding which hearing aid i should get. Any advice?

Answer
I am an audiologist and I don’t currently fit widex or siemens, however both are very good manufacturers. I wish I knew more about the particular models you are considering, but I don’t. However, in general WIDEX is usually the best aid in my opinion. They are a great manufacturer and always put out great products. I have had some issues with siemens aids in the past. And I actually have hearing loss and have worn siemens aids and had problems with my own aids as well.

How much does a hearing aid cost?

How much does the average hearing aid costs apiece, and why do they cost so much?

Answer
In 2007, the average hearing aid in the US sold for just under $2000 each. You can expect to find a range anywhere from just under $1000 to over $3000 a piece. Why the cost? They’re very sophisticated micro-computers, individualized to each specific person’s needs, extremely small, and become obsolete as quickly as other consumer electronics yet are sold in relatively small numbers (think big screen TVs when they first came out), just to name a few reasons.

My best advice is to stay away from gimmicky ads in the paper and coupon deals…seek out a recommendation from an audiologist after a thorough hearing exam. Not all hearing aid dispensers are audiologists so make sure you are seeing a hearing health care professional (ie. an audiologist) not a salesperson. You can ask your primary care physician who they recommend, or ask your insurance company who is on your plan.

If cost is a concern, seek out the best hearing aid you can afford as they will last about 5 years on average. Sound quality is proportionate to cost, and matching you up with a hearing aid successfully means getting features that will work well for how you plan to use it. Ask about payment plans, use your health care spending account if you have one, and see if you qualify for any discounts through your health insurance (although they are rarely covered.)

Can you have a hearing aid in the military?

Is it possible to fail you hearing test at meps and end up needed a hearing aid. After that… Are you still eligible for enlistment?

Answer
Ok, having being forced out the Army 6 months early because of poor hearing, I can tell you that the answer is a qualified yes. Different MOS have different health requirements. For the Army, I think the only MOS you can take with that sort of profile is in finance. For other military branches it may be different. Regardless, you will have to get a waiver to join any branch of the military. Before the war in Iraq, getting a waiver was sort of a hit or miss proposition, there was no real telling before hand whether it would be approved.

With the additional strain on the military now days, it is more likely to get a waiver through. What ever you do though, don’t lose the waiver (make copies if possible), or you could get kicked out just because you can’t prove that you got in on a waiver.

What cell phones work best with a hearing aid?

I have a BTE Phonak Zoom hearing aid, manufactured about 1999. And I need a cell phone but it needs to be hearing aid compatible.

Also, we are REALLY looking to get a RAZR phone in particular. Does anyone know if RAZR phones work well with hearing aids and if so, what model?

Answer
I’m not sure about any cell phones, but you can get a Phonak Smart Link FM system, which has blue tooth technology, and you can plug your cell phone into it, which will send the signal directly into your hearing aid. You’d have to buy a reciever to attach to your hearing aid as well. This can be expensive, but if you’re planning on using your phone a lot it would be worth it. I would suggest you call Phonak’s FM division and ask them more about it. Good luck!
