Hearing Loss Solutions

Losing one’s hearing is not a milestone that an individual typically looks forward to in life. However, thanks to the growing number of solutions to this nearly unavoidable occurrence, it is no longer something to be feared. Hearing aids are becoming a very valuable resource to many aging Americans today. One thing that may be even more valuable than hearing aids, however, is affordable hearing aids. In today’s economy, no purchase can be taken lightly. So, when it comes to enhancing one’s hearing, there is nothing better than high end hearing aids at affordable prices.

One recommendation for getting the best quality for the lowest price is to browse around different online hearing aid stores and centers, such as Hearing Center USA, or one of the many other organizations dedicated to better hearing. Compare different products from each location and come to a conclusion based on which product is within your personal budget and meets your needs.

Your hearing is important to your quality of life, which means that shopping for this product is not like shopping for a new pair of jeans. It is important that you find the product that works best for you personally. Therefore, this process will require you to know about the many different types of hearing aids available.

There are quite a variety of shapes, sizes and levels when it comes to hearing aids. These types range from a higher level that picks up sound in any noise environment, to a lower level that picks up sound in more low-key, quiet environments. The way the hearing aid is worn also varies depending on the type. The device may be placed completely in the ear canal, partially in the canal or it may be an open fit hearing aid. The open fit version leaves the canal open and is placed behind the ear with a small tube or wire carrying the sound to a tiny dome or speaker in the canal. The open fit hearing aid may be found to be the most comfortable as it doesn’t leave the owner feeling as though his or her ears are “plugged up”, and, it’s small size makes it less visible to others.

The final decision should be made based on what level is necessary for you and the type of aid you feel most comfortable with. Once this is decided, the next step is to find the aid you chose within your budget, or as close to it as possible. Although the prospect of finding the perfect hearing loss solution may seem a bit overwhelming, with the right information one can make an informed decision. Every minute spent will ultimately be worth ensuring that you’re hearing is as sharp as ever.

The author knows the importance of hearing aids he suggests Hearing Center USA for hearing assistance. Hearing Center USA provides high-end hearing aids at affordable prices. They have the state-of-the-art Hearing Aid Assistance that helps select the hearing aid that suits you best.

What are the best cell phones for hearing aid wearers?

I am currently using Verizon…the phone I have is ok…but I am looking to purchase a new phone and would like to know what phones other hearing aid wearers are using…

Answer
It’s a tricky question because I’ve seen people do well with some hearing aids and some cell phones, but it seems to vary from aid to aid and phone to phone. Even the network you are on and the area you are in can play a factor.

The best bet is to see if the store has some active cell phones that you can try, and see how it works with your specific hearing aid.

There is really no one answer to this, especially not knowing your exact prescription and make and model of hearing aids.

The New Age of Assistive Hearing Devices

Hearing aid devices now come in many different styles such as behind-the-ear (BTE) aids, usually the largest and least expensive, in-the-ear (ITE) aids, in-the-canal (ITC) aids, and even newer for the Western market, completely-in-the-canal (CIC) aids, which cost about $2,000. There are even implantable hearing aid devices that work just like regular hearing aids but are directly connected to the bone of the ear. These implantable devices are currently available in some countries, although not here in the United States as of yet.

All hearing aids function in generally the same way. They take the sound coming into the microphone in the device, amplify it and then a receiver acting like a speaker outputs the sound in an acoustic form so the wearer can hear it.

When someone is concerned about a potential hearing problem, they should visit their doctor. If hearing loss is suspected, the patient will be referred to an audiologist who tests the person’s hearing. If needed, the audiologist will fit the right type of hearing device for the person. An ear mold and impression of the person’s ear will be taken and used to that is used to make the device fit properly in the ear. It’s very important that the device is fitted properly to prevent squealing which is caused by the hearing aid not sitting right.

For someone who isn’t sure they want a hearing aid but want to find out how they feel before going to the expense of ordering and fitting a permanent one, a disposable type of hearing aid is about to be released onto the market. These disposable aids should last around 40 days, which is about the the life of the battery. The cost of this new device will be about $40.

In addition to traditional hearing aids, there are other types of assistive hearing devices for the home or office. Phones can be fitted with flashers to indicate when there is a call. Vibrator devices can be clipped to a belt and worn so that if the phone rings, the person feels the vibrational signal. Alarm clocks can also be fitted with flashers and vibrators can be attached to a bed leg to signal that it’s wake up time. Just about anything can be made into an assistive device these days. These devices are a good option for those people who don’t want a hearing aid per se, but maybe just want a little assistance.

Many theaters now have a microphone system using either an FM or infrared signal that enables a person wearing a hearing aid in the audience to hear the show just as well as if they were sitting right on stage. Additionally, closed caption broadcasting on television is increasingly common, and a fantastic option for people who are hearing impaired. Closed captioning works by attaching a decoder to a television which causes a running line with the dialogue of the program to appear on the bottom of the screen for them to read.

All telecommunication companies offer relay services for people who are hearing impaired. This involves an operator who takes a person’s words, types them and sends them to the person on the phone who is hearing-impaired. That person reads the words on a device attached to the phone. All conversations take place between the operator and the caller.

Another great device is used in elementary schools, secondary schools and even colleges and universities. In the classroom, students can use hearing devices that pick up a teacher’s words from a cordless microphone worn by the teacher. The signal from the teacher’s cordless microphone is captured by a reciever worn by the student.

There’s definitely no shortage of hearing aid devices and assistive hearing devices available in the world today. From disposable hearing aids to flashing lights, assistive devices come in many shapes and styles. There is some sort of fix for just about any situation you come across. With all this fancy stuff avaiable out there, you’d think hearing problems would be a thing of the past. This is easier said than done, however, since there is a major problem. The problem is many people with hearing impairments don’t get the help they need because they dont even know that all these nifty devices are available to them. We all should do our part to try to get the word out to those who need to know about it.

What cell phones work best with a hearing aid?

I have a BTE Phonak Zoom hearing aid, manufactured about 1999. And I need a cell phone but it needs to be hearing aid compatible.

Also, we are REALLY looking to get a RAZR phone in particular. Does anyone know if RAZR phones work well with hearing aids and if so, what model?

Answer
I’m not sure about any cell phones, but you can get a Phonak Smart Link FM system, which has blue tooth technology, and you can plug your cell phone into it, which will send the signal directly into your hearing aid. You’d have to buy a reciever to attach to your hearing aid as well. This can be expensive, but if you’re planning on using your phone a lot it would be worth it. I would suggest you call Phonak’s FM division and ask them more about it. Good luck!

Hearing Loss in Children What you Need to Know

Hearing loss does not only affect people approaching old age. It is also prevalent in children. In fact, hearing loss is being detected in children at a younger age than ever before.

Type of hearing loss

The most common type of hearing loss among children is called sensorineural which occurs due to damage of the inner ear. The damage can be caused by an infection, injury or most commonly, through exposure to loud noise. This type of damage cannot be repaired.

While sensorineural hearing loss does not permanently improve, it also does not get any worse. It involves a lowering in the ability to hear soft sounds, to hear clearly and can affect how well you understand speech. Typically, this type of hearing loss can be improved through the use of a hearing aid. Other types of hearing loss are conductive and mixed. Conductive hearing loss is when sounds are not conducted to the inner ear properly and can often be corrected with surgery. Mixed hearing loss involves both sensorineural and conductive. A hearing professional can assess the type and degree of hearing loss your child has.

What causes hearing loss in children

Most types of hearing loss is not genetic but is noise-induced, brought on through outside noise that is too loud. There are noises that you have no control over and then there are noises that you create yourself.

Loud music, particularly music played directly into the ear via earbuds, is one way that kids are getting exposed to noise that can damage the ears. A recent study in Australia found that children as young as three have shown signs of permanent hearing loss due to listening to loud music. Do you know that listening to music that is too loud for more than 5 to 10 minutes can produce hearing damage? Shocking but true.

Another similar cause of hearing loss is playing musical instruments too loudly. It is found that playing and practicing in a school band or orchestra can actually cause hearing loss. This is true when the music is practiced in an enclosed area. The National Association for Music Education (MENC) even issued a statement that educators need to recognize music as a cause of noise-induced hearing loss.

What can be done

The most important thing you can do as a parent is to become aware of the hazards of noise-induced hearing loss. Familiarize yourself with the causes of hearing loss and teach your children to take preventative measures.

First, try to ensure that you enforce strict volume guidelines on things such as iPod and other listening devices. Listen to the device yourself to determine what you feel are safe volume levels.

Get your children to use earplugs. Just like the helmet helps keep a child safe and protected when riding a bicycle, earplugs can help keep ears safe from loud noises. Ensure that your child wears the earplugs when practicing in the band or even when mowing the lawn.

The lesson here is to be forewarned. Use precautions and common sense to set limits for children. Teach them the importance of taking care of their hearing and help them understand when noise levels are too loud.

Several types of hearing aids are available for hearing loss in children. The most commonly used hearing aid in children with hearing loss is the behind-the-ear style. Check out our hearing aid review at

What is the limitation of a hearing aid?

a. It is of minimal benefit in noisy classroom. b. It cannot selectively amplify. c. It can’t be used by young children. d. All of the above are limitations of hearing aids.

Answer
Having young children that used hearing aids at 2-3 years, and have had aids that could be programed to amplify certain bands of sound (like an equalizer). I’d say “a” only.

Free Hearing Tests

The importance of regular hearing checks is often overlooked and its importance in terms of health checks often underestimated. Hearing tests are really just as important as regular checks for the eyes and teeth.

Have a look for established companies that offer free hearing tests . A hearing test may only take 15 minutes or sometimes less for a quick hearing screening and this might be enough just to give you peace of mind that you do not suffer from hearing loss or any other hearing related problems.

A more comprehensive hearing test and consultation may involve video otoscopy and other diagnostic tests such as live speech mapping, to see if you are suffering from hearing loss. If a hearing loss is detected then its far better to know and look at what solutions are available.

Its always advisable to ask for a demonstration on the latest digital hearing aids as the latest digital hearing aids from companies such as Phonak and Oticon are really so small and packed with amazing features.

If you feel a new digital hearing aid will help then make sure you look around at hearing aid prices as they will vary a great deal. Its important to look for established companies that offer a good aftercare programme, look for companies that have a good store presence and not just based on home visits. Also ask about what hearing aid warranties they offer and any kind of battery offers.

Look to have a hearing test at least once a year after the age of 50 as this way you can keep a close eye on any deterioration in your hearing and also learn to protect you hearing in noisy environments. Take 30 minutes and book yourself a free hearing test if you have any concerns about your hearing.

Hearing Loss Prevention and Treatment

The very best way of treating hearing loss is to prevent it in the first place. This can be done by the correct use of ear plugs or other devices that minimise excess noise whether that is from the lawn mower or industrial noise you have to live with every working day. Turning down the volume of music and other canned noise will also contribute to keeping your hearing intact.

Once hearing damage has been sustained the only recourse is to visit an audiologist for a hearing test to determine exactly how much hearing loss there is. There are many good audiologist in Brisbane. An audiologist will be able to find out if both ears are affected or only one ear. If only one ear is has hearing loss then only one hearing aid will be needed.

A hearing test is not difficult and to carry out all the hearing tests in Brisbane with expert advice you need to contact some experienced practitioner. In simply involves sitting in a soundproof booth and listening via headphones for sound signals of various frequency such as high beeps and low beeps. Every time you hear a sound you have to press a button on the box you are holding.

This tells the audiologist that you have heard the sound and a graph is then formed to indicate which sounds you cannot hear. Before taking the test, the patient must go to their GP to ensure all ear wax is removed. This may mean using wax dissolving drops for three days, then having the ears syringed out with warm water to remove any wax build-up.

Once this is done the audiologist can perform the test and if hearing aids are needed he will then fill the ear with a silicon solution that sets in the shape of the ear canal. Also one should first research on best quality hearing aids in Brisbane and then use any. It is removed and sent away to provide a cast to mould the hearing aid, which will then fit your ears exactly. Once the hearing aids are ready you will be trained by the audiologist to fit them and shown how to adjust the sound for the best result. Also at times, if these small equipments give any trouble then, there are many hearing aid repairs in Brisbane done with utmost care so that the patient does not face any other problem.

Hearing aids are wonderful, but like glasses they can never be as good as the real thing, so it is much better to prevent the problem in the first place.

Audiologists is an supplier of hearing aids and all kinds of hearing devices and ear plugs. He is into this business for the last 10 years. www.allearsinhearing.com.au

Where can I find the serial number of my hearing aid?

I believe its stamped on the hearing aid. It says ahs# and has some numbers after that. Is that the hearing aid serial number or am I looking in the wrong place?

Answer
Not knowing what brand of hearing aid you have, I’d have to say that the AHS# number is the serial number. Hearing aids aren’t all that big, so there isn’t much in the way of space for much more info, and the serial number wouldn’t be on the inside of the unit. The only other place I’d look would be the inside of the battery door.

Can you have a hearing aid in the military?

Is it possible to fail you hearing test at meps and end up needed a hearing aid. After that… Are you still eligible for enlistment?

Answer
Ok, having being forced out the Army 6 months early because of poor hearing, I can tell you that the answer is a qualified yes. Different MOS have different health requirements. For the Army, I think the only MOS you can take with that sort of profile is in finance. For other military branches it may be different. Regardless, you will have to get a waiver to join any branch of the military. Before the war in Iraq, getting a waiver was sort of a hit or miss proposition, there was no real telling before hand whether it would be approved.

With the additional strain on the military now days, it is more likely to get a waiver through. What ever you do though, don’t lose the waiver (make copies if possible), or you could get kicked out just because you can’t prove that you got in on a waiver.

what is the best digital hearing aid for elderly on the market ?

Looking to buy a hearing aid for my mother.

Answer
There are several hearing aid manufacturers with excellent technology available. Which one is best for YOUR mother can not be determined here. She needs a current hearing evaluation (less than six months old), and a Hearing Aid Evaluation, preferably to include a demonstration, so she can listen through hearing aids to experience what the sound is like. Also, don’t consider just the hearing aid(s), also make sure you find an Audiologist that you feel you can trust and who establishes a good rapport with your mother, for the long term of service.

There are many variables to consider when choosing the best hearing aids for an individual. Here are some resources to help you find out more:

Tinnitus New Treatments Tinnitus Hearing Aid Surgery and Other Treatments

Tinnitus New Treatments

The first thing to treat tinnitus is to find out any underlying cause that resulted in abnormal sound. If it is effectively diagnosed, complete treatment of the problem may stop tinnitus. In most cases it is very difficult to find a possible reason and the options otherwise available are limited drug therapies and alternative methods like hypnosis, electrical stimulation, counseling, relaxation therapies and the use of tinnitus maskers. Tinnitus hearing aid treatment is often considered to be the most effective.

Treating Tinnitus with Drugs:

Currently no drug is approved for treating tinnitus. Some drugs still in experimental stage are, Lidocane, a local anesthetic, anticonvulsants like gabapentine and carbamazepine, antidepressants like paroxetine and sertraline etc.

Surgery:

Micro vascular decompression, a surgical treatment is found to be effective in curing tinnitus in some patients. Cochlear implants are carried out to restore hearing which in many cases also stop tinnitus Tinnitus New Treatments

Hearing aids:

Hearing aids contain sound generators which can stimulate the auditory pathway. In some patients when the hearing is restored it automatically reduces tinnitus also.

Sound Therapy:

The sound therapy also called ‘white noise’ therapy is a highly promising form of tinnitus cure. In this therapy the tinnitus sound is masked by playing some background sound.

Tinnitus Masker:

Maskers are useful for some patients but not for all. They resemble hearing aids and mask the tinnitus sound. The masking sound is preferable to some people if correct masking aid is used. Try the Tinnitus New Treatments now
