Here are some strategies to improve your communication and lessen daily frustration.

First, you should stay on the topic of conversation. If you go “off the topic” get back on track by asking the speaker to repeat the information. Long conversations will require a great deal of attention and focus. By becoming a nose reader you will notice that more information is available by focusing on the talker’s nose so as to lipread and see facial expressions too. You can receive a lot of what is being said via visual cues. No one is going to notice if you are looking at their nose or their eyes. Always attempt to have same room conversations. It is not ideal in everyday life, but you and your family can make adjustments in the way you communicate to ensure maximum hearing benefit. When you are on the telephone make sure that the talker is speaking directly into the phone. To reduce background noise, cover the microphone portion of the phone, NOT your other ear, with your hand to reduce the sound from entering the system.

Considering writing information down is another way to improve communication so that you do not have to recall long lists of details from conversations. Enlist the help of friends and family by making them aware that you have difficulty hearing especially in noise environments. This may cue them to speak directly to you.
It is important to pay attention to what is actually being said, not what you are going to say next, there is always time to formulate your response. Always stay on the topic of discussion it is easier to follow the conversation if you know what you are talking about. Finally, never be afraid to ask the speaker to repeat their message, it is better than an inappropriate response or agreeing to something that you really do not want to agree to. This last one can get you into trouble or into an unwanted obligation.

Some strategies for your friends and family members would be to make sure that they have your full attention and preferably are face to face with you. They should not be shouting at you, this only distorts their message. Try communicating with little or no competing noise. Another helpful tip is to rephrase the message rather than repeating it.

The usage of the above information should lead to improved communication function in most settings. Attempt these strategies in addition to wearing your hearing aids. You can deduct a hearing aid as a medical expense. However, medical deductions are limited to anything above 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. For example, say your AGI was $10,000. Some types of hearing loss are Conductive Hearing Loss which is a result of a disorder of the outer and/or middle ears. Basically, sound is prevented from entering a normal functioning inner ear. Examples of causes are middle ear infection, fluid in the middle ear (with no infection), ruptured eardrum, tumors, stiffening or unhinging of the middle ear bones or it could be just earwax. Another type of hearing loss is Sensorineural Hearing Loss which results from disorders or damage to the inner ear (Cochlea) and/or the auditory nerve. Causes of this type of loss are noise exposure, age related, heredity, ototoxic medications, syndromes, infections, head trauma, and tumors on the auditory nerve. Characteristics of this type of loss are that it is usually permanent, can be degenerative, and is usually not treatable by medication or surgery. Hearing aids are the only solution. A third type is Mixed Hearing Loss which is a combination of both a conductive and a sensorineural component.

Realistic expectations are important to have when wearing hearing aids. Some realistic expectations are that your voice and the voices of others may sound different. Background noise will inevitably get amplified in addition to speech, therefore some speech maybe difficult to understand in noise. Also understanding speech depending on the severity of your hearing loss, the speaker, and the environment may also be difficult. It will still be difficult to understand people talking in another room. Hearing aids are less helpful in rooms with hard floors, walls, and no carpet or drapes. A comfortable fit and volume without feedback is also important. They should make soft sounds audible, normal sounds comfortable and loud sounds tolerable. Keep in mind that even people with normal hearing find many listening situations difficult.

Most important is to be patient. Through time noise and meaning will begin to sort themselves out. The more you wear your hearing aids the quicker this “sorting out” process will occur. The brain has to hear what it does not want to hear in order to know that it does not want to hear it!

Where can I find the serial number of my hearing aid?

I believe its stamped on the hearing aid. It says ahs# and has some numbers after that. Is that the hearing aid serial number or am I looking in the wrong place?

Not knowing what brand of hearing aid you have, I’d have to say that the AHS# number is the serial number. Hearing aids aren’t all that big, so there isn’t much in the way of space for much more info, and the serial number wouldn’t be on the inside of the unit. The only other place I’d look would be the inside of the battery door.

Is there any hearing aid when there is 90 percent hearing loss?

One of my ears is like that,I haven’t used hearing aid yet as my other ear has normal hearing.I like to become a nurse anesthetic ;that’s why I need to hear well from both ears.I live in the United States.Last time I visited an audiologist,she couldn’t suggest me any hearing aid for 90 percent hearing loss,yet I beleive it should be some that’s why I am researching on it personaly.Any information is greatly appreciated.Thanks,

you can put a hearing aid on I am sure if you really feel you need it. However when there is such a big difference between the ears a lot of times the ear with the hearing loss doesn’t sound clear even with the hearing aid. The hearing loss is so severe everything is distorted. the hearing aid sends in a clear sound and the ear garbles it all up and the sound actually impairs you speech understanding. If having a hearing aid would help you to hear environmental stuff for your job it may be helpful to have some amplification on that ear. But a lot of times speech understanding is actually worse with a hearing aid on an ear with that much hearing loss.

If you have deafness problems, the good news is that you can remedy it with hearing aids. There are different types around so you just have to find out which one is ideal for you.

But what is a hearing aid? It is simply an instrument that amplifies sound. Since hearing loss is different for each individual, it has to be configured manually to detect sound pitches at all levels.

You also have the “Open-fit” or “Over-the-Ear” hearing aids. This is a small plastic case that is placed behind the ear with a clear tube running into the ear canal with a mold inside to hold it in place. The new design helps to reduce the occlusion effect which was seen in other models.

Lastly is the bone anchored hearing aid. Similar to a cochlear implant, the patient has to undergo surgery so that the skull can be used as a pathway for sound to travel to the inner ear. If ever the patient has conductive losses, the BAHA bypasses the external auditory canal and middle ear, stimulating the functioning cochlea.

Should anyone who has hearing problems wear a hearing aid? Not for children below seven years of age because the ear is still growing so it will be too costly to make another one just to fit the patient’s ear. It is also not recommended for safety reasons because the hearing aid is made of hard plastic and this could be damaged when the child is playing and that could also cause injury to the child’s ear canal.

There was a time that deaf people had to cup their hand behind the ear to hear what the other person was saying. The ear trumpet soon followed that until hearing aids were invented. The only problem with that was it was too big and this was usually worn on the chest or body. Fortunately, technology has made it smaller so no one will even notice that you are wearing it until they are up close.

Should I wear my hearing aid to a job interview?

I know it shouldn’t matter that I have a hearing aid as long as I can do the duties of the job, but would seeing an applicant wearing one give the hiring manager even a slight doubt about his ability?

I just got the HA, and it’s only on one ear, the other ear is fine without. This will be my first interview that I could wear it to.

Also, does anyone know if this can officially be considered a “handicap”?

How much does a hearing aid test cost?

My hearing has been going down for years and I want to be tested and purchase two hearing aids. Of course, they vary in price quite a bit.

How much would the test(s) cost for a hearing aid? I imagine an audiogram is one of the tests performed. A rough estimate is fine. Most audiologists won’t give me a straight answer when I ask…I guess they want to surprise me with a huge bill, lol.

Can you deduct a hearing aid off your Taxes as a Medical Deduction?

I am hearing impaired, and I had to purchase a hearing aid last year, my insurance company does not pay for hearing aids, therefore there was no reimbursement at all. Any advice will help. Thanks!!

You can deduct a hearing aid as a medical expense. However, medical deductions are limited to anything above 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. For example, say your AGI was $10,000. The hearing aid and other medical expenses would have to exceed $750. Then you would only get a deduction for the amount over. Say the hearing aid and other medical expense were $1,000. Your deduction would be $250. Also, you would need additional itemized dedcution(mortgage interest, charitable contributions, etc.) in exccess of the standard deduction to make it worth it.
