Hearing Aid Communication Strategies
COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES
Communication strategies are necessary with or without hearing aids. They are even more important if you have a hearing loss even if you wear hearing aids. Hearing aids are meant to improve your hearing ability. However, you cannot hear if you are not listening. They do not make you a better listener that is up to you. Here are some strategies to improve your communication and lessen daily frustration.
First, you should stay on the topic of conversation. If you go “off the topic” get back on track by asking the speaker to repeat the information. Long conversations will require a great deal of attention and focus. By becoming a nose reader you will notice that more information is available by focusing on the talker’s nose so as to lipread and see facial expressions too. You can receive a lot of what is being said via visual cues. No one is going to notice if you are looking at their nose or their eyes. Always attempt to have same room conversations. This enhances the signal-to-noise ratio and the talker’s face. It is not ideal in everyday life, but you and your family can make adjustments in the way you communicate to ensure maximum hearing benefit. When you are on the telephone make sure that the talker is speaking directly into the phone. To reduce background noise, cover the microphone portion of the phone, NOT your other ear, with your hand to reduce the sound from entering the system.
Considering writing information down is another way to improve communication so that you do not have to recall long lists of details from conversations. Enlist the help of friends and family by making them aware that you have difficulty hearing especially in noise environments. This may cue them to speak directly to you.
It is important to pay attention to what is actually being said, not what you are going to say next, there is always time to formulate your response. Always stay on the topic of discussion it is easier to follow the conversation if you know what you are talking about. Finally, never be afraid to ask the speaker to repeat their message, it is better than an inappropriate response or agreeing to something that you really do not want to agree to. This last one can get you into trouble or into an unwanted obligation.
Some strategies for your friends and family members would be to make sure that they have your full attention and preferably are face to face with you. They should not be shouting at you, this only distorts their message. Try communicating with little or no competing noise. Another helpful tip is to rephrase the message rather than repeating it.
The usage of the above information should lead to improved communication function in most settings. Attempt these strategies in addition to wearing your hearing aids. You probably have already implemented many of these strategies into your everyday life without even being aware of it. We have a way of compensating behaviorally when we have a lessened sense. The combination of consistent hearing aid usage and improved listening should increase your communication ability and understanding.

Is there assistance available in FL for an adult who is still working that needs a hearing aid?
I heard that my Dad who is 67 and is still working can get assistance to get a hearing aid. The hearing people he made an appt with told him this. Does anyone have info regarding this?
Answer
There are some organizations that provide refurbished hearing aids for patients that qualify for assistance. I’m here in California, and it may be different in Florida, but I’m almost certain that there are programs everywhere for these situations. The catch is — these patients must show that they are in desperate need of this help, in terms of both hearing loss and financial stability.
Another option is financing. This is especially helpful for patients who are still working and do not have the full amount for hearing aids at the time that they need them. Your dad’s Hearing Healthcare Provider may have this available. Some companies offer a financing option that is LIKE a credit card, but can only be used for medical purposes. Some plans offer 0% interest, and can lower monthly payments significantly.
The best place to ask about this is the office your dad is visiting.
Aural Rehabilitation is Important For Hearing Aid Success
Whether, you are a previous hearing aid wearer or not there is a certain period of adjustment that the brain has to make while learning to hearing again. It is important to understand this process and also to have realistic expectations of your hearing aids.
First let us start with how we hear. There are three major parts to the ear that work together to send sound to the brain where it is interpreted the outer, middle, and inner ear. The Outer ear’s job is to collect sound waves and funnel them along the ear canal to the eardrum. The Middle ear is an air-filled cavity that contains three bones. Sound waves hit the eardrum, which cause these bones to vibrate sending the signal to the inner ear. This movement sets the fluid of the inner ear into motion, which shears thousands of microscopic hair cells. The shearing of al hair cell stimulates the auditory nerve which then sends an impulse to the brain where it is interpreted.
Now that we understand a little of about how we hear we need to review what can happen to this system to create hearing loss. Hearing loss can occur as a result from a disruption of normal function anywhere along the auditory system. Some types of hearing loss are Conductive Hearing Loss which is a result of a disorder of the outer and/or middle ears. Basically, sound is prevented from entering a normal functioning inner ear. Examples of causes are middle ear infection, fluid in the middle ear (with no infection), ruptured eardrum, tumors, stiffening or unhinging of the middle ear bones or it could be just earwax. Another type of hearing loss is Sensorineural Hearing Loss which results from disorders or damage to the inner ear (Cochlea) and/or the auditory nerve. Causes of this type of loss are noise exposure, age related, heredity, ototoxic medications, syndromes, infections, head trauma, and tumors on the auditory nerve. Characteristics of this type of loss are that it is usually permanent, can be degenerative, and is usually not treatable by medication or surgery. Hearing aids are the only solution. A third type is Mixed Hearing Loss which is a combination of both a conductive and a sensorineural component.
Realistic expectations are important to have when wearing hearing aids. Some realistic expectations are that your voice and the voices of others may sound different. Background noise will inevitably get amplified in addition to speech, therefore some speech maybe difficult to understand in noise. Also understanding speech depending on the severity of your hearing loss, the speaker, and the environment may also be difficult. It will still be difficult to understand people talking in another room. Hearing aids are less helpful in rooms with hard floors, walls, and no carpet or drapes. A comfortable fit and volume without feedback is also important. They should make soft sounds audible, normal sounds comfortable and loud sounds tolerable. Keep in mind that even people with normal hearing find many listening situations difficult.
Most important is to be patient. Through time noise and meaning will begin to sort themselves out. The more you wear your hearing aids the quicker this “sorting out” process will occur. The brain has to hear what it does not want to hear in order to know that it does not want to hear it!

Where can I find the serial number of my hearing aid?
I believe its stamped on the hearing aid. It says ahs# and has some numbers after that. Is that the hearing aid serial number or am I looking in the wrong place?
Answer
Not knowing what brand of hearing aid you have, I’d have to say that the AHS# number is the serial number. Hearing aids aren’t all that big, so there isn’t much in the way of space for much more info, and the serial number wouldn’t be on the inside of the unit. The only other place I’d look would be the inside of the battery door.
Rnid Tinnitus NHS Hearing Aids
For as long as most of us can remember there has been a lengthy wait for a NHS hearing assessment and the subsequent fitting of NHS analogue hearing aid, with various homeowners awaiting many cycles to complete the process. Rnid Tinnitus
The more recent introduction of digital hearing aids has greatly improved the performance of modern hearing aids. However this has also lead to an increase in demand from new users and those looking to upgrade their current analogue hearing aids. This increased demand has impacted service levels and many NHS waiting lists have increased as a result.
It is a Government commitment to ensure assessments for hearing aids are made within a six weeks. Unfortunately this target only relates to the first stage of the process and makes no difference if patients have to endure months on a waiting list before prescribed hearing aid is actually fitted. Lengthy delays between assessment and fitting can also lead to the need for a re-assessment at the time of fitting. Rnid Tinnitus
The RNID estimates that around five hundred thousand people are currently waiting to have digital hearing aids fitted by the NHS. The RNID also said: “We remain seriously concerned about the capacity of the NHS to meet the Government’s aim of ensuring that no-one waits more than 18 weeks for a hearing aid fitting by the end of 2008.” Rnid Tinnitus
There main area of concern is that the push to meet these new targets may result in a fall in the quality of the service offered. As a result many people in the UK choose to opt out of the NHS service and buy their digital hearing aid directly from a retailer who can offer instant services. Is there any hearing aid when there is 90 percent hearing loss?
One of my ears is like that,I haven’t used hearing aid yet as my other ear has normal hearing.I like to become a nurse anesthetic ;that’s why I need to hear well from both ears.I live in the United States.Last time I visited an audiologist, she couldn’t suggest me any hearing aid for 90 percent hearing loss, yet I beleive it should be some that’s why I am researching on it personaly.Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Answer
you can put a hearing aid on I am sure if you really feel you need it. However when there is such a big difference between the ears a lot of times the ear with the hearing loss doesn’t sound clear even with the hearing aid. The hearing loss is so severe everything is distorted. the hearing aid sends in a clear sound and the ear garbles it all up and the sound actually impairs you speech understanding. If having a hearing aid would help you to hear environmental stuff for your job it may be helpful to have some amplification on that ear. But a lot of times speech understanding is actually worse with a hearing aid on an ear with that much hearing loss.
An Overview Of Hearing Aids
If you have deafness problems, the good news is that you can remedy it with hearing aids. There are different types around so you just have to find out which one is ideal for you.
But what is a hearing aid? It is simply an instrument that amplifies sound. Since hearing loss is different for each individual, it has to be configured manually to detect sound pitches at all levels.
Here, we will talk about 4 types of hearing aids. These are namely the completely in the canal instruments, the in the canal instruments, the in the ear instruments, behind the ear, open fit or over the ear hearing aid and bone anchored hearing aids.
The completely in the canal instrument or CIC is considered to be the best one around because it is so small that no one will notice that you are wearing it. Each one is custom made and this is designed for people who are suffering from mild to moderate hearing loss.
Next is the in the canal instrument or ITC. This is bigger since it has to occupy the entire ear canal. It is very flexible and designed to manage a wide range of hearing needs.
Then there is the in the ear instrument or ITE. This usually fits into the cradle position of the ear and just like the ITC, can handle a wide range of hearing needs. It is a little bigger than the ITC and is also custom made to shape the patient’s ear.
The behind the ear is placed behind the ear and connected using a plastic ear mold that fits inside the outer ear. This is only used by individuals who have mild to profound hearing loss.
You also have the “Open-fit” or “Over-the-Ear” hearing aids. This is a small plastic case that is placed behind the ear with a clear tube running into the ear canal with a mold inside to hold it in place. The new design helps to reduce the occlusion effect which was seen in other models.
Lastly is the bone anchored hearing aid. Similar to a cochlear implant, the patient has to undergo surgery so that the skull can be used as a pathway for sound to travel to the inner ear. If ever the patient has conductive losses, the BAHA bypasses the external auditory canal and middle ear, stimulating the functioning cochlea.
Should anyone who has hearing problems wear a hearing aid? Not for children below seven years of age because the ear is still growing so it will be too costly to make another one just to fit the patient’s ear. It is also not recommended for safety reasons because the hearing aid is made of hard plastic and this could be damaged when the child is playing and that could also cause injury to the child’s ear canal.
There was a time that deaf people had to cup their hand behind the ear to hear what the other person was saying. The ear trumpet soon followed that until hearing aids were invented. The only problem with that was it was too big and this was usually worn on the chest or body. Fortunately, technology has made it smaller so no one will even notice that you are wearing it until they are up close.

Should I wear my hearing aid to a job interview?
I know it shouldn’t matter that I have a hearing aid as long as I can do the duties of the job, but would seeing an applicant wearing one give the hiring manager even a slight doubt about his ability?
I just got the HA, and it’s only on one ear, the other ear is fine without. This will be my first interview that I could wear it to.
Also, does anyone know if this can officially be considered a “handicap”?
Thanks for your help. Interview is in the morning!
Answer
wear it. you dont want to miss anything important. In order for it to be considered a handicap there must be a certain percentage of loss. GOOD LUCK!!!!!
Hearing Aid Manufactureramp#039s HA Profitable Practices Hearing Sciences
Due to increasing number of patients with hearing loss or hearing defects and the recent demands of hearing aids, manufacturer’s design hearing aids are seen to make more profit on the business. Moreover, people do patronize what is the latest in the market that’s why manufacturers improved their products to be more suited not only to the fads but for the users to be more comfortable of them.
This is also the reason why digital hearing aids were designed with more features on feedback reduction, noise reduction, and speech enhancement and with directional microphones. These added features are for the purpose of giving comfort to the users.
The digital hearing aids were manufactured to give more comfort and satisfaction to the users in the sense that environmental sounds are reduced because of modernized features like the signal- specific band dependence, knee pints with lower compression thresholds and more channels. This makes the device more comfortable to users.
Aside from this, there are other features which make the device more advanced. To monitor for feedback while this devise is in use, there is the so-called feedback reduction system. In the event the user is eating, usually the jaws moves and produce sounds. But with this feature, feedbacks are already eliminated because it has the cancellation filter included in the device.
With the noise reduction feature included in the devise, noise coming in specific bands or in low frequencies are likewise reduced. Moreover, it is easy for the user to recognize words spoken by other persons.
For increasing intensity of voices, the digital speech enhancement technology is added in the modern digital hearing aids.
This device is even comfortable to the user even when in travel and passing bumpy roads because of its directional microphones installed in the said hearing aids.
Although there analog hearing aids are still used by many patients, digital hearing aids may proceed on its way to completely replaced it.
Users have different perceptions on the effectiveness of the hearing aids that is out in the market. It is a normal expectation of buyers/users that the new model coming out could be more effective than the old ones. That’s why manufacturers of these hearing devices do not make their newly manufactured products conform to the modern trends but to generate more profits as well. Manufacturers are always trying to include new advancements in order that the products would be more attractive to the users.
These digital hearing aids are more advantageous compared to the old models because it compensates on the kind of hearing defects the user has. These devices can be set up just for the user’s defects in some areas or it could only be for hearing voices restricting other sounds. In most cases, these devices can protect the users from very loud noise or sounds because it can just cause damage to the ears. It is adjustable to control the sound that the user wants to hear and reject those which are unwanted.
Remember hearing aids of whatever sort or kind has only the purpose of amplifying sounds to the users and not exactly to completely heal the hearing defect.

How much would the test(s) cost for a hearing aid? I imagine an audiogram is one of the tests performed. A rough estimate is fine. Most audiologists won’t give me a straight answer when I ask…I guess they want to surprise me with a huge bill, lol.

Is it okay to wear hearing aid while in the Sauna?
I am hearing impaired, and I wear my hearing aid at all times, I haven’t tried this before, but I wanted to ask if it’s okay to wear them while in the sauna? Thanks!
Answer
It won’t hurt it. We give people plug in kits that are basically saunas to dry the moisture out of the hearing aids.
Hearing Aid Enhanced and Improved Version
If you have hearing impairment you need not worry about your feeble hearing. There are professional devices to help you enhance the way you listen to sounds clearly. The digital devices have overcome the drawbacks of the analogue ones and have been successful in providing advanced signal processing. In addition to this, it is also user friendly.
Make use of microcomputers to improve your hearing. You can take advantage of advanced signal receptors in these hearing aids. Amplifier, microphone and a receiver is what you need to be able to hear effectively. You need a micro phone to convert the acoustic energy into an electric one. Amplifiers help you to increase the strength of your electrical energy and thus enhance the clarity of sound. Your receiver will then convert the electrical energy in to a sound energy. Thus, it helps in producing acoustic energy with the help of small speakers known as the receivers.
These digital ones are wearable micro computers which can reduce the background noise. They don’t let the user feel it as it is lightweight. If you are not going to use the device for some time, you can safely remove them and store them in a cool dry place.
On the other hand the analogue type hardly allows you to make adjustments. Unlike analogue type, the digital ones lets you to adjust the amplifier in order to get the sound clearly. It allows for greater flexibility as you can change the settings of your device as and when you want.
Make use of the programmable type in order to enjoy the flexibility. With analogue type, you may get an annoying background noise which is not seen with the digital type. It may be expensive to buy the programmable device, but it’s a one time investment make use of it.
You may have seen devices which produce lot of noise. It is quite irritating when some one is trying to talk to you, you get to hear some weird noise which annoys both the speaker as well as a listener. There is an added digital noise reduction to reduce noise.
When you are looking for a device you need to make sure that you get a good idea of what the device does. The same goes for when or if you want to buy a used device. You will find that some older devices have a resound issue, which will give you a sort of echoing feedback, which could make hearing a lot hard. Try the digital type to avoid the noise!

Hearing Aids for Hearing Loss
Hearing loss victims are not only the senior citizens but young people as well. This means that the cause is not only age but it is due to several causes. The other causes are: impairment of the inner ear nerves, blockages in the outer ear, ear infections, exposure to loud noise, head injury, ringing sensation or tinnitus and overdose of prescribed drugs. In some cases, hearing loss is hereditary. The genes related to hearing loss can be passed from parents to children.
In all of these cases, you need to consult an audiologist for diagnosis, screening, treatment and medication of hearing disorders. The audiologist has to conduct the hearing screening and testing. Whatever the findings are, for sure treatment and medication will follow. But in most cases, hearing aids are commonly recommended by audiologist.
Hearing aids are the usual remedies for hearing loss. Like eyeglasses for defective vision, there are hearing aids for defective hearing. Although the hearing aids are not for the purpose of restoring one’s ability to hear but only for the purpose of making louder sounds received by the ear.
Hearing aids are usually recommended by audiologists to those whose hearing had been impaired. But before proceeding to buy one, you have to get recommendation from your audiologist or any professionals in the hearing health care practice on what kind of hearing aids to buy. There are hearing aids which are battery operated and are disposable ones. These are cheaper compared to other brands.
Whatever kind of hearing aid it is, whether disposable or not, the usual complaint of the user is the noise while eating their meals. This is true because of the movement of the jaws- there is always a disturbance created while eating. Some hearing aids enter deep into the ear; in such a case, ringing sounds are produced. So, the best solution is to properly fix the equipment to suit to the shape and size of the ear. If you cannot fix it yourself then you have to go back to the place where you bought the product.
In addition, hearing aids are mostly costly. Besides, buying this is not covered by insurance. In some instances, hearing aids are affordable. There are those who sell it on a discounted price but the problem that you sometimes may encounter defects. The expensive ones are those with unique features.
Most individuals go for appearance and convenience of the hearing aids. Thus, regardless of the price and the kind of hearing aids, people prefer more tiny devices because they are more convenient to wear. This is the reason why they prefer the smaller models.
Still there are users who consider the manufacturer of the hearing aids. In other words, they go for the brand that they trust most.
