What degree of hearing loss does one have to have to get a hearing aid?

Im in my 30’s with a childhood history of chronic ear infections (the docs say I have alot of scar tissue) , tubes in my ears 4 times, my early years of school were spent in speech therapy, in my 20’s I had a head injury which only made my hearing worse I feel my hearing has gotten worse over the years Any advice from someone who has a hearing aid would be greatly appreciated

Answer
Hi, I’m an Audiologist

There is no prerequisite degree of hearing loss for hearing aid fitting. There are mild gain instruments used by people who have no hearing loss, but have learning disabilities that make focusing on sound and speech difficult. By enhancing just the softer sounds of speech without making loud sounds any louder, the patients are better able to follow what is being said.

Prior to considering hearing aids, you may want to consult an ear surgeon to determine whether there are any reconstructive surgeries that might help your hearing. In most cases, the audiologist would want you to obtain otologic clearance for hearing aids prior to prescribing hearing aids for the first time – especially with a history of frequent ear infections, surgeries and scarring. If it is determined that surgery is not an option, or if you elect not to have surgery, you will want to consult an audiologist that will prescribe a device that is appropriate for your not only for your hearing loss, but your listening environments and lifestyle as well.

It is also important to have realistic expectations, as many factors can impair a person’s ability to listen and comprehend that are beyond the capacity of a device that can only help with hearing acuity. As mentioned above, there are learning disabilities, neurological and psychological disorders that impair a person’s ability to focus on, comprehend or remember what they have heard.

My audiologist suggested I get a hearing aid that will a) help with the loss and b) block certain pitches. What does the “hearing aid” type earpiece in musicians ears nowadays do, pipe-in lyrics or music, in stereo?

Saw Darius Rucker on Oprah yesterday. Noticed hearing aid type devices in his ears. I’ve seen these devices in the ears of musicians used more and more these days. What are they for? Can he hear himself? I assume it’s in stereo or mono-aural?

Answer
i can only assume it gives them the beat of the song prerecorded into their ear so they do the right times and that, it also acts as something to keep them from being tone deaf, put your finger in your ear and sing and you will hear a difference then not having it in.

Better control with today’s digital hearing aids

Years ago, I worked in a school where our boss—the principal—had suffered from hearing loss. Elaine wore one of the newer models of hearing aids available at the time, so it was fairly discreet, but we teachers were aware of it. I’m ashamed to admit that we took advantage of that knowledge, too. During staff meetings, we would jockey for position on her weak side, knowing we could get away with chatting to colleagues as long as Elaine wasn’t looking. Yes, I admit it: we were as disrespectful of her sometimes as our students were of us. It was probably a good thing that the principal’s use of a hearing aid was not common knowledge, or the students, too, might have learned to take advantage of it, especially if they had ever witnessed the teachers doing so.

With today’s technology, we rowdy teachers would be out of luck. Digital hearing aids currently on the market feature significant advances in signal processing. What that means is that Elaine could enjoy increased audibility of the sounds she wants to hear without experiencing discomfort from a high intensity of unwanted sounds. Low-level environmental sounds can be reduced in intensity, while sounds of interest—like chatty teachers’ voices—come through loud and clear. In fact, today’s hearing aids can differentiate between the sound of voices and background noise, helping improve speech recognition.

Additionally, Elaine would have options in hearing aid design that would make it difficult, if not impossible, for those she worked with to even realize she was wearing a hearing aid. One of the more popular designs is the behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid, which technology has rendered so small as to be easily hidden by a hairstyle. Designs become more discreet from there, with in the ear (ITE), in the canal (ITC) and completely in the canal (CIC) options. Hearing aids that fit completely in the canal are the smallest of all, virtually invisible to anyone who is not staring right at your ear.

So my fond memories of slightly rebellious staff meetings would probably not be possible today. If I were in a similar situation, I’d have to discover new ways to rebel. Since students constantly discover creative new ways to thwart authority, surely we teachers would manage to do so.

Ugly, oversized hearing aids have been replaced by discreet stylish digital hearing aids that are more attractive and more effective to those suffering from hearing loss.

If you are deaf will wearing a hearing aid help all the time?

Im asking because i’m working on a project for class.

I have noticed by research that some deaf people wear hearing aids. I just thought that when you were completely deaf, then how would a hearing aid help. I know if you have some hearing left…then a hearing aid would work. But how would it work if you are completely deaf.

Could someone please expalin this to me.

Answer
No, if you are completely deaf then no hearing aid will help you hear, Conductive hearing loss, is when you are still able to hear certain sounds and frequencies. This usually happens when a person suffers some sort of injury to any part of the ear… A hearing aid would benefit them, to help make up for the damaged drum, canal or ossicle.

This is such a huge project and there are so many types of different hearing loss that it’s very hard to list them all. But if you look up hearing loss or hearing impairment you will find a wealth of information.

More so than you will get on here. Deaf people have the possibility to hear if they can be repaired surgically, but in most cases they will not ever hear…
