I am an audiologist and I don’t currently fit widex or siemens, however both are very good manufacturers. I wish I knew more about the particular models you are considering, but I don’t. However, in general WIDEX is usually the best aid in my opinion. They are a great manufacturer and always put out great products. I have had some issues with siemens aids in the past. And I actually have hearing loss and have worn siemens aids and had problems with my own aids as well.

Years ago, I worked in a school where our boss—the principal—had suffered from hearing loss. No, if you are completely deaf then no hearing aid will help you hear, Conductive hearing loss, is when you are still able to hear certain sounds and frequencies. This usually happens when a person suffers some sort of injury to any part of the ear… A hearing aid would benefit them, to help make up for the damaged drum, canal or ossicle.

This is such a huge project and there are so many types of different hearing loss that it’s very hard to list them all. But if you look up hearing loss or hearing impairment you will find a wealth of information.

More so than you will get on here. Deaf people have the possibility to hear if they can be repaired surgically, but in most cases they will not ever hear…

Protection against very loud noises is also often included.

Some hearing loss sufferers still prefer Analogue Hearing Aids as can be seen on various message boards.. The main reasons given is that the Analogue gives a much more natural sound as it amplifies all sounds equally including background voices which we all live within our day to day lives.

The main advantage of the Analogue Aid over the Digital Aid is that it is much cheaper, therefore there will always be a place for it for those who cannot afford the expensive Digital Aids but still want improved hearing.

i can only assume it gives them the beat of the song prerecorded into their ear so they do the right times and that, it also acts as something to keep them from being tone deaf, put your finger in your ear and sing and you will hear a difference then not having it in.

How long did you have to wait for your hearing aid?

I heard that waiting lists are really long and was shocked today when the audiology dept. rang to say that they had a cancellation Monday (exactly 7 days after i was told i would need a hearing aid) to go and pick up mine. I did have an urgent referral as I need to test it before considering a myringoplasty, but even so, isn’t a week lightning fast?!

Digital Aids differ from Analogue in that the amplifying part of the process is carried out digitally, which converts it into `bits` of data by a tiny computer type chip in the Hearing Aid.  These `bits` which represent the sound are then analysed and manipulated by a process called Digital signal processing.  Software is then used to carry out precise changes to the `bits` of information such as reducing the amplification of background noise.  These electrical `bits` of information are then fed to a minute microphone and converted back into sound, which is fed into the ear channel to act on the eardrum.

As hearing loss can be very different in sufferers, it is most important that the Digital Hearing Aid is configured to exactly compensate for the individuals needs.  The first step in providing the correct Aid is to find out what particular hearing loss the sufferer has.  A Digital hearing test should be carried out by an audiologist who will determine the level of hearing over a wide range of frequencies producing an audiogram – a chart of your hearing responses.  With these results the Digital Hearing Aid can be set up to compensate for the loss of hearing in particular areas.  It is also possible the Hearing Aid may be set up  to just allow the sufferer to hear voices and restrict any other sounds etc.

Some Digital Aids have also a built in circuit that will protect the ear from very loud sounds which could cause damage. Others also have facilities for suppressing Tinnitus in the ear.  It can be seen that a Digital Hearing Aid will help with hearing loss giving greater control of what can be heard and what is not wanted.  However, it is most important to understand that no Hearing Aids will give you back normal hearing and also it will also take a little while get used to the new sounds reaching the ear.

What are the best cell phones for hearing aid wearers?

I am currently using Verizon…the phone I have is ok…but I am looking to purchase a new phone and would like to know what phones other hearing aid wearers are using…

It’s a tricky question because I’ve seen people do well with some hearing aids and some cell phones, but it seems to vary from aid to aid and phone to phone. Even the network you are on and the area you are in can play a factor.

The best bet is to see if the store has some active cell phones that you can try, and see how it works with your specific hearing aid.

There is really no one answer to this, especially not knowing your exact prescription and make and model of hearing aids.
